DocForge
An Open Wiki For Software Developers

User:Matt

From DocForge

I'm the owner and primary system administrator of DocForge.com.

My motivation for creating DocForge came partly from frustration. Every software developer is familiar with looking at a variety of sources of information: books, online documentation, forums, etc. Books are usually most useful for specific reference and general learning. They often quickly become outdated. Online documentation is relatively static and often incomplete or lacking in important details. Forums are great for finding answers to specific problems but are much less useful for reference.

An organically growing wiki can be a great help to software developers. Cross-reference, flexibility, organization, and contributions from many make it a great reference. I have a lot of experience which can help others, but I'm not interested in having a one-sided conversation (e.g. blog) or locking my contributions (e.g. book). So I spawned an open wiki to contribute my knowledge and connect it with the knowledge of others. Plus I can organize the information in a useful way that others currently don't. I think people also find a site dedicated to software developers to be more useful then a general reference wiki.

I hope you agree and join our community.

Software Development Experience

I have more than 15 years of professional experience as a software developer. For the first 10 years I built software for the financial services industry using Microsoft Visual Basic, .NET (obviously only since inception), Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase, while on the side I contributed to open source projects such as Drupal. Then I completely dropped Microsoft software for many reasons. Now I develop web applications with PHP, Python, Java, and MySQL, typically on Linux servers.

DocForge Projects

Previously, I focused primary on PHP and MySQL. Lately I've been working on web applications and its subpages.

I'm thinking of adding some form of comment system to DocForge, given the Talk pages are completely unstructured. The comment annotations in the django book look like a great idea, but I'm open to other suggestions.
